What I did NOT do this summer

Labor Day weekend is coming up which unofficially marks the end of summer (nevermind that me and all three of the kids are already back in school) and since Memorial Day we have had many blogworthy life events (not the least of which was my 40th birthday - gag) and yet...I've only blogged about the garden at my dad's house. {sigh}

Well, I promise to make up for it.

In the meantime, the other thing I did not do this summer...lose weight. I had all these lofty goals of swimming with my kids 4 days a week and going entire days where I only ate vegetables. Psh. I was too busy not being busy. On the other hand, I had a professor at BYU (Rulon Dean Skinner) who always said if a goal isn't written down then it's a wish. Guess those were just my wishes for the summer.

Well, I'm writing my weight loss goals down now. Heaven help me. I started a blog. No, not this blog. This one is old and about my family and only for people I know/love to read. A blog with two of my girls about weight loss. We're sharing our goals, our progress, our hard times...we're sharing everything. We're a little more public over there, so we're using code names (guess who AB is?!), but I would love if you would check it out and leave comments! I need all the support I can get in this battle...and it'll give you something to read until I catch up on my family blog!

an overcast day at the beach is better than ANY day at school

Yesterday was our first summer beach day. Even though the temp in the couple of days before was in the 90s, we woke up to cloudy skies. Didn't stop us.
These two girls cozied up.
Cold? That doesn't stop the boys from getting in the water!

My nephew Nathan's first time at the beach!
Peanut Butter sandwiches always taste better at the beach.
A school of dolphins swam back and forth and did some flips just past the break. The kids were mesmerized.
Welcome Summer!

Absentee

I haven't blogged in more than a month. A month! Perhaps because I'm enjoying my children being home from school...and Har still being gainfully unemployed. For example, next week we'll be camping here (p.s. we're not using a camper - because we don't have one).

See you when my summer vacation is over!

Playing tourist. Playing chef.

I've got a backlog of family fun I haven't blogged. Here's a sampler...

TOURISTS
We gave Aunt Kay a lift from LAX to Santa Barbara and decided to check out the beaches. We got our exercise and toured the coast on this cool...bike. I guess you'd call it that. It was the perfect day: cool and sunny. Funny enough, I think our favorite part was when we drove through the Santa Barbara Cemetary on our way home. Beautiful views. My camera phone couldn't capture the beauty of this tree on the edge of the bluff with the ocean behind. Gorgeous. Not to mention the fascinating history just reading the gravestones. Is it weird that I like cemetaries?

CHEFS

J.R. with her fancy crepe pan
Emma and I saw a cooking show where this chef woman with crazy hair made crepes. We've been wanting to make them ever since. We saved it on our DVR because crazy-haired chef lady didn't have the recipe on her show's website. *hmpf!*

We had to wait for fresh cherries to go on sale. (Harland never misses that. I think he ate 5 lbs. by himself that week.) Lucky for me, it was the week of my birthday. We pitted ours (something new to try!) and made a yummy topping. Inside was a mixture of marscapone cheese, a little sugar and mini chocolate chips.
Emma working hard (see the tongue?) to make crepes in a regular pan.

This was the delicious result. Birthday cake paled in comparison to this dessert. Mmmmmm.
